A contrast in style

We ate dinner tonight at the home of some friends. A few minutes before we left, I told Paul Ivan and Isaac to get ready.

Paul Ivan came out wearing a suit. He looked great but we told him he was a little overdressed and asked him to change, which he did.

We got into the van and drove off. We pulled up to the home where we would be eating and Isaac jumped out of the van. I noticed that he was not wearing any shoes and told him to climb back into the van and get them.

During our brief conversation it became clear to me that he did not bring any from home. We were right on time, so the boy had to stay the whole night without any shoes. Nobody really took notice, so he shouldn't be too emotionally scared from the whole ordeal. Our whole family, however, got a laugh out of our little Huckleberry.

After dinner the four families in attendance gathered in a circle and each person shared their favorite family Christmas traditions. I almost said that we started a tradition tonight where when people invite us over to eat during the holidays one of our family members doesn't wear shoes. Guess whose turn it was tonight?

Isaac mentioned something to me later as we discussed his bare feet. He said, "you don't need shoes on your feet to eat."

Technically, he is right. But in the past he could have said you don't need shoes to go to grandma's house, the store or a friend's house. This is a pattern we need to work on.

Otherwise when he gets older, he's going to go on a lot of first dates. :)
