Restate to be Sure You Understand

It was four days before Christmas in 2003 and we were eating breakfast -- Brandy, the three children and me (Emma wasn't born yet).

As we sat around the table, I told a story that ended with "So he learned that it is better to give than receive."

Before the message could sink in Rebekah, who was five at the time, intuitively used a skill that I worked to develop while serving a mission and still find handy today. She restated what I said and we all knew immediately how well she understood my message.

"Ya -- you'd better get a receipt," she said.
