A peek into a troubled soul

I rarely post about stories I write for the newspaper, but this one is so unusual. Here is a link to the story about the man who wants to remove all his appeals and have his death sentence carried out as soon as possible.

Be forewarned, that while it is compelling information, it is also dark.

I look forward to focusing my attention on a talk I have been assigned for Sunday about how the words of the Savior never cease. I'm much more comfortable with that topic.

Have you noticed I never used this person's name in any posts? That is by design, so that I don't have people coming to our blog who do Internet searches on his name.

I am glad you didn't put his name in your blog. Good article but I am glad you did the interview and not me.

Now if only I had a subscription! We studied inmates in abnormal psychology...fascinating, and scary. Maybe you guys can just send me the article. :)

He looks like a boy, someones son.The photo caught me off guard. He must be in a lot of pain.I wonder how he got to this point and why he made the choices he did.It makes me wonder about the word EVIL. Can a person have evil inside them or do they act out evil actions ?
Thanks for the story.

Now I just read your article.I don't think he is evil but sounds mentally ill.Cutting yourself is a sure sign.He seems unaffected by what he has done, which is more than being mentally ill.Maybe evil is how you act after the action ?
He still is just a boy.

This is EASILY the most controversial story at the newspaper in years. Within hours of being published, it generated a dozen letters to the editor and phone calls complaining about it all day long.

The story absolutely struck a chord with people. Newstands were sold out, it was the top story on the Internet and people felt so passionate about it they complained.

The letters to the editor will print in the next few days.

When people ask me what I want to do with my law degree and I tell them I want to prosecute crimes, even some of my closest friends ask how I could live with myself. My mission president even seemed a little disappointed.

But reading this article and that he is a remorseless, cold-blooded killer only inspires me to go after people like him more and more. How could I not use my law degree to prosecute crimes?

Paul, very well done.

I have a lot of respect for the prosecutors I have observed. I love to see them argue forcefully for justice based on the law.

I also enjoy watching defense attorney's argue for mercy, although sometimes those arguments are difficult to sell -- like in this case.

Our justice system is fair, and it works.

Another thing that impresses me about our judicial system is that men and women who are adversaries in the courtroom usually understand each others role in the process and thereby treat each other with respect and professionalism when the case is done.

At least it's been that way with high profile cases. I don't know if it's that way with misdemeanors.

Craig, you've got the right personality and skill set to do the job very well. Just remember, be nice to the reporters. They are people, too.

Evil is when we give ourselves over to things we know are wrong. Evil brings pain, hatered, and torment to more lives then just the one individual. That was an amazing story Paul, I would read the book.
Keith
Evil is as simple as good, just in equal opposition to it. Lets not make it more superstitous then good, it is choices daily. Just amazing though, really book man....

Jake,

Think about what you are saying. If this man had killed your mother, you would think he is pure evil.

I agree this guy has a lot of pain, but to lash out at others is the way he did is despicable.

And he has not been repentant from day one. In Bell County Jail the adminstrator said he was the worst behaved inmate they have ever had. He is currently on level three at death row, where the house the worst behaved inmates.

Yeah your right man. He is evil. I'm not defending him at all. Evil comes in many shapes an forms an hurts everyone around it. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut. Great story though Paul

Great Job!! Great Article!! I could hardly wait until it was posted in the paper. This guy must be really sick. I think it's really sad that people get to this point. He thinks that it is going to be a party, he is going to have his last cocktail wow....and then he picks a song to go with it. Everytime I hear that song now I will be thinking about this guy and how sick he must be. I also read today that he has had a cellphone for awhile in prison. He must have lost his mind to call the people he has called on it including two Bell County reporters according to the news and a senator in Houston. His mom was arrested today in Austin when she arrived from Georgia to come and see him in prison. Anyways, so glad you had the opportunity to go and interview this guy and share it. I will be looking for the letters to the editor....it will be interesting to see what people have to say. I love my Criminal Justice class and I can't wait to have a degree so that I can work in this field. Take Care Paul and I will be looking for more great articles. Jodi :)
